Mushiage ware is said to have been developed in the Edo period (19th c.) at a kiln under the patronage of the Igi clan, the head retainers of the lord of Okayama domain, in Mushiage, Oku. Mushiage ware has an elegance similar to that of Kyoto-made pottery, making it especially popular for tea ceremony.
Highly acclaimed for his technique and artistry, Kuroi Sensa (b. 1945) has not only inherited the traditional techniques of Mushiage ware, but has also opened up new realms of possibility for Mushiage ware by incorporating inlay in his work.
