Made: Bunsei 1(1818) - Meiji 8(1875)
Kashino & Ushimado, Ushimado Town

Five of these festival floats (danjiri) are used in Ushimado Shrine’s autumn festival, while the other three appear in the festival held at Kashino Shrine each October.
Mainly made of zelkova wood, these danjiri each have wooden wheels attached to their undersides. Measuring over 5 meters long, 1.6 meters wide, and 2.5 meters high, the danjiri all have differing designs. The Mifune Danjiri is entirely built in the style of a noble’s boat and is covered with black lacquer; the others have figureheads variously shaped like fantastical creatures, namely dragons, lions and Qilin, and each supports a two-story roofed structure atop the boat-shaped base. The ranma, or ‘transoms’ (rectangular areas between the roofs’ lintels), are decorated with relief carving.
All of the danjiri were built between the end of the Edo period and the beginning of the Meiji period (mid-late 19th C.)
