Nerikuyō is a Buddhist ceremony in which the tale of ‘The Welcoming Descent of Amida Buddha’ is dramatized, recounting how a party comprising Amida, Kannon Bodhisattva, Jizo Bodhisattva, and others, descends to escort devotees to the Western Pure Land. Kōbōji temple's Nerikuyō can be traced back to the Kamakura period and is said to have preserved well its original style and appearance, as evidenced by the statue of Amida which welcomes the party along the way. This Buddhist ceremony is held in May every year.
