The main gate of Honrenji, is located at the top of the temple’s stone entrance steps. The architectural style, known as shikyakumon, literally ‘four-legged gate’, includes two main pillars and four supporting pillars and was used for high-ranking temples.
Although there is no clear evidence, such as a munafuda (commemorative inscription), of the original date of construction, there are two records regarding this gate. One states that the main gate was first built during the Genroku period (1688 - 1704), and the other tells that it was rebuilt in 1823. In addition, typological analysis of its decorations also suggest that the current gate was built in the early 19th century.
