Though Shinkōin Temple, known locally as Nishidera (lit. West Temple), is said to have been originally built at some point between 749 and 756, the current main hall is from the late Edo Period (19th C), having been rebuilt in Bunka 1(1804).
This superb structure has been praised for its great architectural value. The expansive roof that covers its entrance steps, along with its large lattice doors, give the entire building a sense of weight and dignity, while the consummate skill of the craftsmen, as well as the natural beauty of the wood, are apparent in the details, such as the decorative gable pendants.
