Stone statue of a seated Jizō Bosatsu (Bodhisattva of the Earth Matrix)

宝光寺 石造地蔵菩薩坐像の画像

Municipally Designated Important Cultural Property (designated 2004)
Made: c.14th century.
Location: Hōkōji temple, Kashino, Ushimado
Dimensions: Height: 74.0cm

Carved from a single block of limestone, this statue depicts the figure of Enmei Jizō (bodhisattva of longevity) sitting on a lotus pedestal, his head framed by a halo.
Based on typological analysis of the pedestal, which comprises many tiny petals in three levels atop an upturned flower, it is thought that this statue was made at some point in the 14th century.
