As in the case of this hanging scroll, depictions of the Jūsanbutsu, a group of thirteen Buddhist deities including Dainichi nyorai, Fudō Myōō and Kannonbosatsu, are used as the principal image at traditional Buddhist memorial services. Against a field of indigo, the Nyorai are depicted in gold, while the Bosatsu and Myōō are rendered in vibrant colors. Based on the facial expressions, postures, and methods of color application, this scroll is believed to have been made at some point in the early 15th century. Of paintings of the Thirteen Buddha that survive in Okayama Prefecture, this is an especially ancient and skillfully realised example.
