Nationally Designated Important Cultural Property (designated 1917)
Made: Early Heian period (10th century)
Yokeiji temple, Kitashima, Oku
Dimensions: Height: 167.8cm
This statue stands to the right of the main statue in the temple’s Yakushidō, the hall built to house its statue of Yakushi, the Buddha of Healing. On its head, a cylindrical crown, it stands with its right arm relaxed at its side, palm flat and facing outwards, and left arm crooked, hand posed as if originally holding something.
Made from a single log, the figure’s skin is painted with black lacquer and decorated with stamped gold leaf. Though now plain, the clothing is believed to have originally been coloured.
Due to the commonalities between this and the main statue, it is probable that it too was made in the 10th century, only slightly later than the latter.
