Nationally designated Important Cultural Property (designated 2011)
Made: Early Heian period (late 8th – early 9th century)
Ōgashimaji Temple, Toyohara, Oku
Dimensions: Height: 122.7cm
The main statue of Ōgashimaji Temple is ordinarily kept out of sight, secreted from view in a miniature shrine, only to be seen once every 33 years when its doors are opened to the public.
The statue looks as if it is about to move, appearing to be standing with its weight shifted slightly to one foot. Such a stance is very rare in statues of Senju Kannon.
This finely-made statue displays features of the early Heian period (late 8th – early 9th century), such as the deep and sharply rendered style of carving and the clothing’s complex, flowing appearance.
