Made: Genroku 3 (1690)
Location: Honrenji temple, Ushimado, Ushimado Town
Dimensions: Height: 16m

The sanjū no tō (three-story pagoda) of Honrenji temple was built in 1690 according to a copy of the building’s munafuda (commemorative inscription). The building stands atop a raised area within the temple complex close to the sea, suggesting that this pagoda was designed with its visibility from the ocean in mind. Though its construction is typical for the time, the different details on each of the pagoda’s levels, along with the fine overall balance of its appearance, evidence the period’s high cultural standard.
As the smallest three-level pagoda in Okayama prefecture, it is possible to clearly see the upper story’s architectural details.
