Tahōtō are a type of two-story pagoda which comprise a smaller circular second story sitting atop a square structure formed of a set of bays in a 3×3 arrangement.
Although it is unknown when Jōenji temple’s two-story pagoda was originally constructed, according to a copy of the munafuda (commemorative inscription), it was rebuilt in 1690. This small pagoda is about 12 meters high and shows high quality carpentry, with a different structure used on each floor.
In addition, its proportions, such as the width of the 1st and 2nd floors, are the same as those of the most famous pagodas of the medieval period. This ratio gives it a finely balanced appearance.
