Prefecturally Designated Important Cultural Property (designated 2002)
Made: Rebuilt in Bunka 12 (1815)
Location: Yokeiji temple, Kitashima, Oku
Dimensions: Height: 21m (approx)
The three-story pagoda of Yokeiji temple is roughly 21 meters high in total, with the first floor not only being slightly taller than the second and third, but also taller than that of other similar pagodas.
It is unknown when the original pagoda was constructed, though work on the current structure began in 1809 and took six years, completing in 1815. According to the building’s commemorative inscription (munafuda), it was built by a master builder who, along with his apprentices, was based in Shukumo village, Oku (modern Kōchizaki, Okayama city). The wooden framework in the eaves of the first ceiling in particular displays skillful workmanship.
