Kannon mask

Prefecturally Designated Important Cultural Property (designated 2000)
Made: Late Kamakura period-Muromachi period(13th c.-16th c.)
Kōbōji temple, Senzu, Ushimado
Dimensions: approx.  20×15cm

This set of ten masks, comprising six of Kannon (Bodhisattva), two of Jizō (the Bodhisattva of the Earth Matrix) and two of Doji (child acolytes), are worn by the party who escort the departed to paradise in Kōbōji temple’s Nerikuyō ceremony.
Each has been primed with gofun (white pigment), and then colorfully painted. The faces of the Kannon are golden, the crowns are decorated with gold leaf over lacquer, and the hair is ultramarine. It is estimated that these masks were made between the late Kamakura and Muromachi periods (13th c.-16th c.).
