Made: Kamakura period - Meiji period (late 12th C. - early 20th C.)
Location: Kōbōji temple, Senzu, Ushimado
According to legend, the ancient temple of Kōbōji temple was established by Hōon Daishi, a famed priest of the Nara period (8th century CE). Among the documents in the temple’s archives is a collection of 135 documents from the Kamakura period to the Meiji period (late 12th C. - early 20th C.) which have been designated as a cultural property. These documents, known collectively as the "Kōbōji temple records", contain valuable information on the region’s economy, politics, and religion.
The document in the photo is known in Japanese as the ‘Ashikaga Takauji migyōsho’ (shogunal order of Ashikaga Takauji). Dated November 21st 1350(Kannō 1), this document is an appeal by shogun Ashikaga Takauji’s to Kōbōji temple, which he orders to pray for his success in subjugating Ashikaga Tadafuyu, who had betrayed Takauji and defected in the Kannō disturbance.
