Prefecturally Designated Important Cultural Property (designated 1959)
Made: Late 4th c. CE
Location: Hattori, Osafune
Dimensions: 96m long (approx)
This large keyhole-shaped burial mound (zenpō kōenfun), approximately 96m in length, was built in the latter half of the 4th century. It is thought that the main circular back portion of the mound was shingled with 10cm river stones and encircled with cylindrical clay ‘haniwa’ figures. A stone coffin constructed from stone slabs was also excavated from this main section. The mound contains two chambers, a north and a south, with a number of finds having been excavated from the north. These include two bronze mirrors with designs in relief, an iron axe, and numerous blades.
